Long before its southwestern expansion, Dubai’s business was almost entirely conducted in and around the now-historic neighbourhoods of Al Fahidi, Al Karama, and Deira. Positioned along the banks of the creek, each district benefited from direct access to the Arabian Gulf, supporting Dubai’s growing reputation as a vital trade route.
However, the discovery of oil in the 1960s was the true catalyst, enabling the ambitions of a leader with a far-reaching vision. As part of this drive toward global connectivity, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum engaged John Harris Architects to design what would become the Dubai World Trade Centre — the first significant step in the emirate’s trade evolution.
Today, while Dubai World Trade Centre is geographically north of Downtown, the naming of ‘Uptown Dubai’ reflects the city’s growth trajectory — a poetic nod to an expanded cityscape, an evolved business landscape, and the emergence of a new centre of gravity in the south.
A Location with Intent
Previously considered a peripheral outpost, DMCC’s location has emerged as one of its greatest strategic strengths. Positioned within proximity to Jebel Ali Port and offering unmatched accessibility from Abu Dhabi, Uptown Dubai serves as a vital connector for businesses operating across the UAE.
That importance is set to grow further. With Emirates airline announcing its relocation to Al Maktoum International Airport by 2034, the southern corridor will play an increasingly central role in shaping the city’s movement, business, and logistics flows — placing Uptown Dubai just 30 minutes away from Dubai’s future primary aviation hub.
Uptown Dubai: A Landmark Comes to Life
From its inception, Uptown Dubai was envisioned as more than just a collection of towers. It was designed to be a complete ecosystem — a place where architecture, design, and urban planning converge to inspire.
For years, Uptown Dubai was a vision and an architectural ambition waiting to rise, a district designed to redefine how we live, work, and connect. Now, that vision is no longer just a blueprint. It’s real. It’s here. It’s waking up.
The delivery of Uptown Tower, the district’s first super-tall structure, marks a milestone in that vision. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, the architects behind Burj Khalifa and the EXPO 2020 Dubai masterplan, the tower is a reflection of design excellence and urban ambition. Inspired by DMCC’s prominence in the diamond industry, both towers encapsulate the geometric brilliance of precious stones, echoing the elegance of the earlier Almas Tower.
Standing at more than 340 metres across 81 storeys, Uptown Tower has already become a landmark on the city’s southern skyline. It offers Grade A commercial office space across 22 floors, all pre-leased prior to completion, and features amenities such as 24/7 security, reception, valet parking, and a dedicated VIP shuttle service to the DMCC Metro station.
The Experience Begins
Every great district has a moment where it starts to take shape. For Uptown Dubai, that moment is now.
At the heart of the district, The Atrium is emerging as a dynamic gathering space for the community, setting the tone for a rich social and cultural offering. Uptown Social delivers an all-day atmosphere perfect for casual meetings and networking, while SUR introduces refined Mediterranean dining in a relaxed yet sophisticated setting.
The SO/ Uptown Dubai Hotel elevates the hospitality experience with 188 bespoke rooms and suites, avant-garde interiors, a rooftop pool and lounge, and a holistic spa offering world-class wellness treatments. From The Citronelle Club’s French-Asian fusion menu to the intimate ambiance of Savant, the district’s culinary and lifestyle credentials continue to evolve. The SO/ Uptown Dubai Spa redefines wellness, blending avant-garde design with world-class treatments, while the rooftop pool and lounge bring a cosmopolitan energy to the city’s skyline.
This is a place designed not just for living and working — but for connecting, creating, and thriving.
Elevated Living at SO/ Residences
Above the hotel, the SO/ Uptown Dubai Residences by Ennismore, a collaboration with Accor, span the top 28 floors and offer 225 exclusive apartments ranging from one-bedroom to expansive penthouses and duplexes. Interiors feature contemporary finishes, future-focused layouts, and stunning views of the Dubai skyline.
Residents enjoy access to a range of community amenities, including an indoor pool, gym, private cinema, kids’ club, multipurpose hall, and sky lounge — all complemented by the Accor Live Limitless Diamond membership. With 124 units already handed over and many layouts sold out, only two of the twelve two-bedroom duplexes remain available.
Building Momentum: What’s Next
As the first tower welcomes its residents and tenants, the broader Uptown Dubai masterplan is accelerating. The district will feature eight towers, all designed to LEED Gold standards, encompassing a total gross floor area of 538,000 sqm (5.8 million sq ft).
The next phase includes Mercer House by Ellington Properties, offering two mid-rise residential towers with studios, apartments, penthouses, and access to a 45,000 sq ft beach club, alongside retail, sports, spa, and wellness spaces.
Meanwhile, enabling and foundation works are underway for two more towers, measuring 23 and 17 storeys respectively, with Swissboring Overseas Piling Corporation appointed for initial construction. Phase 2 is officially in motion, and full delivery of the district is on track for 2028.
